Fire Department

Smithfield Serves Hyde Park
Smithfield Fire and EMS serve the residents and businesses of Smithfield, Hyde Park, Richmond, Amalga and the surrounding areas of Cache County including Benson in northern Utah.

Additionally, they respond through automatic aid on the initial call to structure and wildland fires in North Logan, River Heights, Providence, Logan and Trenton.

The department also responds to any community throughout Cache County or Franklin County, Idaho when requested.

Burn Permits
Open burn season is April 1 - May 31 and September 15 - October 31.Permits shall be obtained from the State Department of Air Quality (DAQ), at this link
Permissible Burning Permit Required
Unless prohibited by state statutes or regulations, other city ordinances, applicable declarations of closed fire seasons, or the order of a law enforcement officer, the Smithfield City fire chief or his duly authorized agent, the following types of burning are permitted, providing that a city permit has first been obtained:

The burning of pruning from trees, bushes and plants, or of dead or diseased trees, bushes and plants, including stubble, incidental to horticultural or agricultural operations.

Unattended and uncontrolled fires prohibited

It is unlawful for any person to leave any fire unattended whether on private or public property.

A fire shall be deemed unattended when any flame, live coals or embers remain and the person or persons responsible for the fire have left the proximity of the fire either in distance or time that would preclude prompt suppression action by said person or persons.

Any fire on private or public property burning uncontrolled and without proper and adequate action being taken to prevent its spread is declared a public nuisance.

Recreational Fires (campfires)
Recreational fires are outdoor fires with a total fuel area less than 3 feet in diameter and less than 2 feet in height for pleasure, religious, ceremonial, cooking, warmth, or similar purposes.

Recreational fires are prohibited when the Bear River Health Department has issued a Red or Yellow air quality

Recreational fires are prohibited when the Utah Clearing Index for Utah Air Shed #4 is less than 500

Recreational fires are outdoor fires with a total fuel area less than 3 feet in diameter and less than 2 feet in height for pleasure, religious, ceremonial, cooking, warmth, or similar purposes.
